The most famous sports book in the world, Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, revealed its new cover the other day for their 2017 edition, featuring India’s star batsman Virat Kohli playing an unorthodox shot.
Wisden Editor Lawrence Booth says of the choice:
“Virat Kohli is the most exciting batsman in the world today. He pulverised England during India’s 4-0 Test win before Christmas, and averages over 50 in each of the three international formats – a remarkable achievement. And he’s a product of his time. The cover of Wisden 2017 shows him playing a reverse sweep – the kind of unorthodoxy that would once have been frowned upon, but is now part of batting’s bread and butter. The Almanack is delighted to be able to celebrate the game’s evolution, in the hands of one of its most thrilling practitioners.”
Wisden has been published every year since 1864. Wisden 2017 – the 154th edition of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack – is crammed, as ever, with the best writing in the game. Matthew Engel looks back at 60 years of Test Match Special, Derek Pringle reveals the secrets of ball-tampering, and Gideon Haigh explores the evolution of the six. There are also superb pieces by Rob Smyth, Vic Marks and Tanya Aldred, plus the all the usual reports, reviews, scorecards and statistics – and of course the hard-hitting Editor’s Notes by Lawrence Booth. In an age of snap judgments, Wisden’s authority and integrity are more important than ever.
