Kevin Pietersen is back in English County Cricket. The controversial batsman has gone back to Surrey for the 2015 season and should feature in their first match in April against Glamorgan.
It’s no secret that Pietersen has his own agenda at the moment, namely getting back into the England team, and it’s hard not to wonder whether this move is made with his own interests in mind rather than those of Surrey. However, the club may benefit in the short term as they have gained a very talented player who is aiming to prove a point.
That talent usually comes with a price though. Dressing room harmony and team spirit may suffer as a result of Pietersen’s presence. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time. If he really wants to get back into the England setup he will need to prove he can be part of a team unit, as well as be someone who can score runs.
Personally I do not expect to see him in an England shirt again. Everything that has happened over the past year has just left him with too many personal vendettas against key members of the England team and staff. It’s hard to imagine that these can all be overcome – and that no new ones will be created – especially when considering Pietersen’s temperament.
Surrey will hope that England’s loss becomes their gain this season.
